In one sentence: it's something that is responsible for adding new functionality to WP.
When you install a bare WordPress, it will contain three sample themes and two basic plugins. On each WP, you can perform various actions as standard, such as publishing posts or making a simple blog page.
What can you do in “bare” WP?
You can set up WP so that the main page can contain blog entries or the blog page can be a subpage. However, you can always publish entries and pages in bare WP. You can later add the created pages to the menu, thanks to which a skeleton of a simple WWW page consisting of the main page and subpages will be created.
In business cards, there is usually a home page, i.e. the main page and subpages: offer, gallery, contact. As for the blog, it usually consists of a main page and subpages with entries. The advantage is that the option of categories and tags is already available by default in WP.
We also have archive pages available, which are generated automatically. On such a page, for example, after clicking on a given tag, entries related to that tag appear. After clicking on a category, a similar thing happens – entries from a given category are displayed.

Please, don't be a business Janusz and just buy it.
Of course, there are other spam plugins besides Akismet that work and don't have such licensing restrictions (e.g. Antispam Bee). Personally, I usually throw Akismet away and install the latter. Your decision.
Hello Dolly – a relic of the past
Hello Dolly of course does nothing. It displays fragments of a single jazz song in the cockpit. You could say that it is completely unnecessary. Why is it installed at the start then? Well, because when plugins were created – it was the first one to be created. It is such a sentimental, archival plugin. In fact, after installing WP it is worth removing it. It will neither be updated nor is it needed for anything.
