Change your focus by following CRO tips: processes > tactics
When sharing CRO tips, conversion rate optimization and growth are often discussed in terms of tactics.

Everyone is looking for a quick, small solution they can implement for 10x growth. A button text tweak here, a color change there.

While tactics and growth hacking may be more appealing than systematic processes, experts rely more on the latter. Why? Because the world of ecommerce sales is highly contextual.

What works for giants like Amazon or eBay may not work for you, for example. You can't bring in someone else's solutions and expect them to solve your store's problems.

Instead, Peep Laja of the CXL Institute urges those new to CRO to rely on systematic processes:

Peep Laja, CXL Institute
“Many people who are new to CRO assume it is a list of tactics or a checklist. Sure, there are best practices, but these are just the starting point, not the final destination.

“Conversion rate optimization is all about driving growth through research and experimentation. These two components are the backbone of CRO. Research helps us understand our visitors and what they do (or don’t do). Through experimentation, we arrive at optimal solutions to identified problems.”

The process is a little different for everyone, but generally it goes something like this:

Conduct qualitative and quantitative research on your online store to identify problem areas.
Use your research to generate ideas for tests and experiments.
Sort these ideas using a prioritization method like ICE or PXL .
Start running the highest priority test or experiment.
Analyze the results of the test or experiment.
Record or archive the results of the test or experiment.
Use the insights from your most recent test or experiment to generate smarter ideas for future tests and experiments.
This process emphasizes knowledge and continuous learning. It also puts the spotlight on your online store. This way, you learn what works for your ecommerce and your audience instead of what works for Amazon and its audience, for example.

The problem with tactics and growth hacks is that they don’t take context into account. A systematic process, while perhaps not as exciting, does.
